In one of the early scenes in "Lost in Translation" (Bill Murray, Scarlett Johanssen), I noticed Ms. Johanssen's character knitting a beautiful blue lace scarf. My knitting lust took over -- I needed to make that scarf! As luck would have it, the wonderful Edith Eig, who owns La Knitterie Parisienne in Studio City, California, designed and made the scarf and included the pattern in her book, Mother of Purl, a fabulous book with great patterns and very useful technical information. Edith is an amazing teacher, and the store has a lively social scene on Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings. I left the store that evening with my autographed copy of the book and three balls of Rowan Kid Classic (SO soft, such beautiful colors) and the scarf has gotten many compliments whenever I wear it anywhere.
Then there's that scene in Grey's Anatomy where Meredith has taken up knitting to soothe her nerves...

And the scenes in The Closer last season when Brenda Lee Johnson was on administrative leave and had many projects of all sorts going...including the knitting!

i'm sitting in my town library right now and know for a fact that they have the Mother of Purl book, so I'm going upstairs right now to pick it up and see if Lost in Translation is in, because I've never seen it. Thanks!

I went and found Mother of Purl, but I can't find the scarf pattern anywhere in the book. What page is it on?

On the tv show "Gilmore Girls" there was an episode where all the women in town took up knitting for some cause. It was really cute because it was a "Knitathon" where they were outside in the town gazebo and of course doing more talking than knitting, but it was cute. On that series, we saw Lorelei knit other times as well.

I recall someone once talking about Uma Thurman knitting on a train in some movie...does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I can't think of the train one, but Uma is the person who speaks one of my favorite knitting comments in a movie: In "Prime" she is telling her therapist how fantastic the lovemaking is with her new boyfriend. She says something like "I'm ususally not so into them, but his P**** is s cute that I want to knit it a sweater." I laughed so hard. Any P**** sweater patterns out there?

Another one that makes me laugh is in the movie "Raising Helen" Joan Cusak's character is knitting and telling her husband about all of the celebrities knitting now. Later in the movie someone arrives at their house driving a Jag. She wonders who it could be. Her husband replies, "It's probably a celebrity coming to knit with you."

I also love the Raising Helen knitting bit. But my all time favorite knitter in a movie is the scottish hen in Chicken Run! She is a hoot!

Are they any other suggestions for good knitting books of any kind? I get frustrated because I see only one or two things out of a book I would like.
